Whilst exploring Japan in August 2015, Carla Fletcher walked the sacred trails of the Kumano Kodo -
An ancient Shinto and Buddhist spiritual pilgrimage through the forest’s and remote countryside of the World Heritage Kii Mountains.
‘It was in the mountains, where these incredible large Butterflies, from the depths of the forests would magically appear and disappear along the journey.’
Coupled with the inspiration of nature during this trip was an incredible time spent exploring Naoshima Art Island - An island full of Modern Art and Architecture.
The contrast of the minimalist Ando architecture curated with light filled works by Monet, Andy Warhol,
Yayoi Kusama and James Turrell to name a few, were pivotal influences for Fletcher.
‘ I had emerged from the magic of the deep mountain forests to arrive on an Island which is completely dedicated to the experience of Art.
I was Immersed in the synergy between Contemporary Art and Architecture - I was in a dream that kept on getting better ’
